Leaving my phone behind for a 12-day cruise in China turned out to be a liberating experience. Initially motivated by cybersecurity concerns and the desire to bypass the Great Firewall, I prepared meticulously by packing alternatives for my phone's functions, including a watch, a digital camera, and printed itineraries. The first few days were challenging, as I struggled without the instant access to information and communication that my phone usually provides. I faced hurdles like navigating without maps, limited payment options, and the frustration of not being able to share experiences in real-time. However, as the trip progressed, I found unexpected joy in disconnecting. I became more mindful, engaged with my surroundings, and appreciated the beauty of the moment without distractions. This experience taught me the value of being present and the mental health benefits of stepping away from technology, prompting me to consider more intentional phone usage in the future.
