Massive Data Breach Exposes Sensitive Info of Millions at National Public Data

A significant data breach at National Public Data, a Florida-based company that compiles personal information for background checks, has potentially compromised the sensitive information of nearly every American. The breach, which occurred in late December 2023, has been linked to a hacking group known as USDoD, which claims to have stolen personal records of approximately 2.9 billion individuals. The exposed data includes full names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and email addresses, making it a treasure trove for identity thieves. National Public Data has acknowledged the breach and stated that it has implemented additional security measures, but the company’s response has been criticized for its lack of timely notifications to affected individuals. Experts recommend that those impacted take immediate steps to protect themselves, such as monitoring financial accounts, placing fraud alerts, and using two-factor authentication on online accounts. The logistical challenges of notifying all affected individuals further complicate the situation.
