Credit card companies get your information from credit bureaus under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and send pre-qualified offers to potentially interested individuals. If you're not in the market for a new card, these offers can be an annoyance and a waste. To opt out, visit OptOutPrescreen.com or call 1-888-5-OPTOUT for a five-year electronic opt out or a permanent opt out through a mailed-in form. While opting out can reduce the number of offers, it may not stop all of them, especially from issuers that don't use bureau lists. For broader opt-out from mail and phone offers, you can register on the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) website for a small fee, which will keep your preferences for 10 years.
