Debt Collection Harassment of U.S. Military Service Members Surges 24%

Debt collection agency harassment complaints by U.S. military service members surged by 24% in the last quarter, with a significant 40% increase in attempts to collect on debts not owed. The number of complaints rose from 1,360 in Q4 2023 to 1,833 in Q1 2024, as reported by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). A new report by BadCredit.org highlights the impact of these complaints on national security interests, with California and Texas seeing the sharpest increases. Resurgent Capital Services, CL Holdings, and Portfolio Recovery Associates were named the top offenders. The report provides detailed analysis including state-by-state complaint data, the most reported debt collection agencies, and the main harassment issues. BadCredit.org's study aims to inform policy and consumer protection agencies to better safeguard service members from unlawful debt collection practices.
