Burglary rates have been declining, and while there are several factors contributing to this trend, improved home security stands out as a key reason. In the past, burglars often targeted homes with security signs, assuming they contained valuables and that alarms were not active. However, modern internet-connected security systems and doorbell cameras have made it much harder for burglars to succeed. Additionally, economic factors and a decrease in the resale value of commonly stolen items like home electronics have also played a role. Now, the rise of working from home is becoming a new deterrent, as burglars avoid houses with occupants and neighborhoods benefit from increased informal surveillance by residents, adding another layer of protection against crime.
