Jared Thomas Triumphs in Historic Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup Debut

Jared Thomas clinched victory in the inaugural Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup event at Martinsville Speedway, driving the No. 96 JTR Motorsports Engineering Mazda MX-5. Starting from pole position, Thomas faced fierce competition from Westin Workman in the No. 13 BSI Racing Mazda MX-5 throughout the race. The event featured its first red flag on lap 40 due to a mechanical failure, but Thomas maintained his lead through multiple restarts and cautions. The race was marked by intense battles, particularly during the closing laps, where Thomas and Workman exchanged leads. Ultimately, Thomas regained the lead with just two laps remaining, securing his first Martinsville clock trophy. This race was significant as it marked the return of open-top cars to Martinsville since the 1950s and was the first time the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup raced on an oval track. The event adds excitement as Martinsville prepares for upcoming NASCAR Playoff races.
